Why SAGR?
Lagoons are cost-effective, low-maintenance ecosystems for removing many harmful wastewater components. However, winter ammonia removal is challenging because:

  • Frozen, un-aerated lagoons block oxygen needed by nitrifiers.

  • Nitrifiers lack sufficient surfaces for growth.

  • High cBOD consumes oxygen and delays nitrification, especially as cold slows heterotrophs.

  • Low temperatures reduce nitrifiers’ metabolism and reproduction, slowing ammonia conversion.
